Facebook Private Video Downloader
Use this page for a Facebook video that you can watch while logged in, when its link does not work in the normal download box. You copy the video's page source on a computer and paste it below. It works only for some videos.
Paste the page source
For videos you can watch on Facebook but whose link does not work here
This needs a computer and a browser where you are logged in to Facebook. It usually does not work on phones.
How to download a private Facebook video
Use a computer, and log in to Facebook in the same browser that you use for this page. Chrome, Edge and Firefox all work the same way.
- Open the video on its own page, so that the address bar shows the address of that video and not the feed.
- Copy that address and paste it into box 1. Box 2 then shows the same address with view-source: in front of it.
- Press Copy in box 2, paste the address into a new tab and press Enter. A page full of code opens: this is the page source. Instead, you can press Ctrl+U on Windows or Linux, or Option+Command+U on a Mac, while the video page is open.
- On the page with the code, press Ctrl+A to select everything, then Ctrl+C to copy it. On a Mac, use Command+A and Command+C.
- Paste the code into box 3 and press Download. If GetSave finds the video, it lists the files, as it does for a normal link.
Safari cannot open view-source: addresses. In Safari's settings, open Advanced and turn on the features for web developers. Then go to the video page and press Option+Command+U. The code opens in a panel: click inside it before you press Command+A and Command+C.
On a phone or tablet
- iPhone and iPad: this does not work. Safari and Chrome on these devices have no built-in way to show the page source, and websites that show the source for you are not logged in to your Facebook, so their copy has no video.
- Android: Chrome can open view-source: addresses, but Facebook sends phones a page without the video, so it usually fails. Turning on Desktop site in Chrome's menu may help, but there is no guarantee. Use a computer if you can.
If you see an error
What each error means, and what to do:
- A link instead of the page source: box 3 needs the code of the page, not its address. Open the address from box 2 in a new tab, or press Ctrl+U on the video page, then copy all the code from there.
- The text is too short: only part of the page was copied. On the page with the code, press Ctrl+A (Command+A on a Mac) so that everything is selected, then copy it and paste it again.
- The page is not logged in: Facebook sent the page as it looks to visitors who are not logged in. Log in to Facebook in that browser, reload the video and copy the code again.
- No video found: the copied code has no video in it. This happens when it comes from the feed, a profile, a group, a phone, or a browser that is not logged in. Open the video by itself, so that the address bar shows only that video, and copy the code of that page. This also makes it more likely that you get the video you want, and not another one from the same page.
- The page source is too large: pages that show many posts, such as the feed, can be too big. Open the video by itself and copy the code of that smaller page instead.
- The video links have expired: the code was copied too long ago, and the video addresses in it no longer work. Reload the video on Facebook, copy the code again and paste it without waiting.
What happens to the page source
GetSave uses the page source for one purpose: finding the video.
A page source holds information about you and your Facebook session, such as your name and data from your login. Paste it only into websites you trust, and never send it to other people, for example in a chat or by email.
GetSave never asks for your Facebook password. You log in on Facebook itself, in your own browser. The privacy policy explains how GetSave handles data.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for every video?
No. It works only for some videos. Most failures come from pasting the address instead of the code, copying only part of the page, copying the wrong page, or pages that are too large, so check what the errors mean first. Some videos fail even when every step is right.
Why does it not work on my phone?
iPhone and iPad have no built-in way to show the page source of a website. Android phones can, but Facebook sends phones a simpler page without the video. Use a computer with Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
Do I have to give GetSave my Facebook password?
No. You log in on Facebook, in your own browser, and copy the page from there. GetSave never asks for your Facebook password. Never type it on a website that offers to download videos.
Why did I get a different video?
The page you copied showed more than one video, for example the feed, a profile or a group, and GetSave took the first video it found. Open the video you want by itself, so that the address bar shows only that video, and copy the code of that page.
Is it allowed to download a private video?
Only download videos that you have the right to keep. A private video was shared only with certain people, so ask the person who posted it before you save it or show it to others. Facebook's own terms also apply.
